Lightning Roulette: Lucky Numbers, 29:1 and Our Data
Take a standard single-zero roulette table, then let lightning strike a handful of numbers after bets close. That is Lightning Roulette in a sentence. The table layout and the outside bets are exactly what a European roulette player expects. The difference sits entirely in the straight-up bet, where a smaller everyday payout comes with occasional very large wins.
The trade-off at the centre of the game
According to Evolution's official page, confirmed by an independent review for the headline numbers:
- The wheel holds 37 pockets, 0 to 36, with a single zero.
- After betting time ends, between one and five numbers are struck by lightning.
- Each struck number receives a multiplier between 50x and 500x.
- A straight-up bet on a struck number that wins is paid at that multiplier.
- A straight-up bet on a number that was not struck pays 29 to 1, not the 35 to 1 of ordinary European roulette.
- Splits, corners, streets, colours, dozens and the other bets pay standard roulette odds and are not affected by lightning.
In return, struck numbers receive 50x-500x multipliers. If you play straight-up numbers, most wins are smaller than at a normal table and a few are much larger. On outside bets (red/black, odd/even, dozens) the payouts are the same as in standard roulette.
We do not quote an RTP figure in this article; the current value is in the game's help screen.
A worked example
Suppose you place 10 units straight up on 17 and the ball lands in 17.
- If 17 was not struck, you are paid 29 to 1: a profit of 290 units and your stake back.
- If 17 was struck with a 100x multiplier, that bet pays 100 to 1: a profit of 1,000 units, with your stake returned.
Had you also placed 10 units on red in the same round, that bet would pay 10 units exactly as at any roulette table, whether or not lightning hit 17. The multiplier never touches outside bets, which is worth remembering when the bolts start flying across the screen.
What our data adds
For each spin we store the payout multiplier attached to the winning number. When the winning number was not struck, that value is 29x; when it was, the value is the lightning multiplier. This lets us answer a simple question directly: how often was the winning number a lucky one?
Across 4,585 spins with a stored multiplier, the winning number was struck by lightning 329 times, or 7.2%, roughly once every 14 spins. The multipliers on those hits broke down like this:
| Multiplier | Spins |
|---|---|
| 50x | 139 |
| 100x | 124 |
| 150x | 21 |
| 200x | 21 |
| 250x to 400x | 12 |
| 500x | 12 |
About four in five hits were 50x or 100x. The maximum 500x appeared 12 times, around once every 380 spins.
There is a neat back-of-the-envelope check here. If k numbers are struck and the ball is equally likely to land in any pocket, the chance that the winner is a struck number is k/37. Our 7.2% corresponds to an average of about 2.7 struck numbers per spin. That figure comes from our data alone. It is not an official number and says nothing about how many numbers will be struck on any particular spin.
Zero landed 127 times in 5,214 spins (2.4%), against 2.7% for one pocket in 37. The multiplier table uses spins with a stored multiplier (4,585); the zero rate uses all spins (5,214).

Reading number counts without fooling yourself
The Lightning Roulette page shows the latest results and how often each number has come up. In our sample the most frequent number appeared 173 times and the least frequent 114 times. On a 37-number wheel, a gap like that can also appear by chance over this many spins. Our chi-square test of roulette number counts is in “Hot and Cold Roulette Numbers: A Chi-Square Test”. A number that has appeared often is not more likely next time, and one that has been absent is not owed a turn.

Before you play
Big multipliers get the attention, but they are rare: the 500x top value appeared only 12 times in 4,585 recorded spins. Decide on a budget you can afford to lose, keep stakes small relative to it and stop when it is gone.
Frequently asked questions
How many lucky numbers are there each round?
According to sources, between one and five, each given a multiplier from 50x to 500x.
Do multipliers apply to red/black or dozens?
No. According to Evolution's official page, only straight-up bets can be multiplied; every other bet pays standard roulette odds.
Can the history of lucky numbers predict the next ones?
No. The lucky numbers are drawn at random every round and earlier rounds have no influence on them.
